Surface Inc is delighted to announce that the beautiful, bespoke designs from Terrain Mosaics now have a home at the NW Design Centre in Hollinwood, Manchester.

Thanks to the lovely Denise and Neil at NWDC, Terrain are working on a fantastic 7sqm installation for one of their highest profile sites at the centre. Kevin at Terrain is in the consulting process with the NWDC team in order to finalise a design which will be contemporary, unique and transform the current cluttered tiling sample area into a canopied pod of light and drama.

Tara Damask

Of course we’ll publish the finished piece after installation. Some of the other designs that the NWDC currently hold as samples are Terrain’s classic ‘Hicks’ inspired pattern and a new design called ‘Tara Damask’, a damask pattern on a blended randomised gradient of vitreous and goldlink tiles.

The NWDC also holds samples of Luminoso translucent wood, Litracon light transmitting concrete, Individual Creation glass and marble bead aggregate, Atelier Alain Ellouz translucent alabaster and our brand new addition, Cocomosaic! What a great place to go browsing for inspiration!

Here at Surface Inc we were really excited to hear about the use of translucent wood in the Wright Restaurant at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Designed by Andre Kikoski Architects in collaboration with artist Liam Gillick, the 1,600 square foot space features a metalwork and Corian bar, illuminated planes of woven texture and a magnificent, curvilinear bar of walnut Luminoso.

21 square metres of walnut Luminoso was used in the installation which was completed in January 2010.

According to Andre Kikoski; “the closer you look at the material, the better it gets….. it’s amazing close-up.”

He added: “If Frank Lloyd Wright were alive today, this is a product he would work with.”

You can’t get higher praise than that for this beautiful and multiple award winning material!

The Wright Restaurant at the Guggenheim has won many awards and fantastic reviews since opening, including ‘Best of the Year’ from Interior Design Magazine and ‘Outstanding Restaurant Design’ from the James Beard Foundation.

The New York Times said ‘The Wright at the Guggenheim is striking, visually impressive and elegant.’

Ombrae system creator, Roderick Quin has expanded the already astounding versatility of this revolutionary surface design material by introducing Cor-Ten steel to the portfolio of substrates.

Standard Ombrae panels have been available for some time in aluminium, the first commercially available material for the Ombrae optical tiling system. The development of Cor-Ten steel panels expands the potential applications to very large scale buildings or projects where the specific qualities of Cor-Ten are preferable to aluminium.

Available in pixel sizes of 35mm, 50mm and 100mm, the Cor-Ten version also allows architects and designers to work on larger scale images or to mix and match the pixel sizes to add extra complexity to their designs.

For specifications, inspiration and application ideas please check the pdf files attached or visit the Ombrae brand page and Ombrae case studies.

Aluminium panels are available in 10mm and 25mm pixels.

For more information or to arrange a meeting please contact us.

We look forward to bringing you more inspiring developments from Ombrae very soon.

Surface Inc is proud to bring to the market patented, premium, innovative and inspiring decorative, structural and practical surface finishes.

We keep things fresh by keeping things moving. Our core brand value is to constantly search out the next big things and add them to the portfolio of brands we represent.

If something’s new we’ll have heard of it, so why not give us a call first to get an update and find out if it’s something that’s going to be appearing as one of our featured brands.

Instead of seeing one representative per material, Surface Inc provides you with one contact point for a whole raft of different materials to inspire and energise your architectural or interior design projects.

An individual contact will be allocated to your specific enquiry and will follow you all the way from initial contact to order fulfilment, making sure you can always keep track of your individual project status.

We’re based in the UK but have rights for a number of the materials we represent in various markets, such as Australia and the Middle East. If we don’t represent the material you want to use in your particular market then we’ll happily put you in contact with your local representative.
Take a few moments to explore our website and learn a bit more about our featured brands: Luminoso, a light transmitting wood; Luccon, a light transmitting concrete; Ombrae, cutting edge bas relief sculpture with optical tiles; Terrain, a great contemporary alternative to traditional mosaic tiling; Kolar, a sculptable wood and acrylic product and Alessia Giardino with her concrete lace and wallpaper.

We’re young, enthusiastic, live for great design and we’re really looking forward to providing help and inspiration to your projects for a long time to come!
Make sure you get all our news as it happens – new projects, new brands, showroom updates, events and PR, keep checking the website, sign up for our blog, follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page.

Thanks for stopping by and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
